Nick Palin (a.k.a. Spook) and Sam Speaight began working together on a record label named nine09 in the year 1999, debuting on the Australian dance music scene with a compilation CD and double vinyl release, a thing unheard of in Australia at that time. Also unheard of then, was the east coast tour of launch parties, which included a touring VJ. For it's efforts, nine09 was nominated in the best Australian compilation category of the 2001 3D Dance Music Awards, receiving a wide range of praise and encouragement from the industry and market alike.
Several releases followed on both CD and vinyl, with new media approaches to marketing strategies and direct demographic penetration through live events. The most successful of which, JaseFOS's "Do What U Want" was a dance floor favourite in clubs across Europe in 2005, with DJ Tiesto naming it his "Best Track of 2005". These fuelled the secondary businesses of nine09:Touring Management (First to tour Chris Carter, Tipper, Deekline and more in Australia) and nine09:Live (Event brand specialising in breaks).
Since then, nine09 has become a vehicle for the creation, management and proliferation of unique electronic music of the highest standard. Our core focus is the development of new music media by taking a forward thinking approach to developing music and supporting the artists behind it. In addition to it's core business of artist development, nine09 still provides a range of services to music companies at a corporate level, these include international touring, event promotion & production, brand development, marketing advice, as well as a host of related consultancy services. |

The Elements Tour is an idea founded by two brothers in business, Sam Speaight and Nick Palin (a.k.a. VJ SPOOK). Here was a vision to bring the masters of the Hip Hop elements to Australia, combining them with local talent, to create a once in a lifetime, unique experience for us Australians who are usually starved of that sort of spectacle.
The first national tour featured performances and a battle between the world's best turntablist, DJ Q-Bert and the world's best freestyle Emcee, MC Supernatural, run in coalition with the first ever Australian division of the Scribblejam DJ & Emcee Competition. This was followed by the second tour in December of 2007 which featured DJ Z*Trip, Soup from Jarrassic 5, Swollen Members, Jungle Brothers and DJ Format, who performed individually and finally combined on stage for the most historic Hip Hop spectacle Australia has ever seen.
Check out live VJ recordings from the last two tours in the DOWNLOADS section of this site and stay tuned for The Elements Tour round 3...

The home of Spook's first VJ residency (The Globe), was also the birthplace of a club called Funktrust (est. 2001) - a product of the most unholy of unwholesome unions between DJs Will Styles and Learned Hand.
After a proven commitment to double vodkas and an enforced venue change (moved to The Hunter Bar), Spook became the official Funktrust VJ on the third anniversary of the club's inception in 2004. Every Thursday night became an almost religious cleansing of the soul, with dangerous levels of spirits consumed and much dancing to the gods. In this drunken haze, Spook had the opportunity to perform with an amazing array of artists, some that he can actually remember were DJ Zeph, Krafty Kuts, Tayo and Maseo from De La Soul, but he's sure there were more!
Since the club's closure late in 2007, the Funktrust DJs have kept up their shenanigans through a radio show every Friday night on Triple J, and Spook has continued to work (I mean, drink. No... Work!) with them at every possible opportunity... |
