VJ SPOOK (a.k.a Nick Palin), has been working as a VJ since late last century, providing innovative visual stimuli for audiences at clubs, events, tours and festivals all over Australia.
With a strong professional background in digital media, an honours degree in multimedia production and an amateur interest in motion graphics since childhood - Spook began dabbling in live performance video as soon as he could get into clubs and a professional career as a VJ soon followed. Since then, his style has developed through work on a range of the largest productions in Australia, across a variety of musical genres, while supporting some of the greatest acts in the world today.
Since 2004, Spook has focused much of his energy into the Australian Hip Hop scene, providing visuals at concerts for international touring artists such as Public Enemy, Ice T, N*E*R*D, DJ Jazzy Jeff, KRS-One, Bone Thugs n Harmony and many, many more. As a VJ, he has toured Australia with hip hop heavyweights such as Mix Master Mike, De La Soul, DJ Format, as well as Canada’s Swollen Members and turntable master DJ QBert.
In 2006 he joined Snob Scrilla, to tour Australia with the band until 2008, when Bliss n Eso hit him up to be their resident tour VJ. Since then he has also worked on visuals for the One Dayers (Horrorshow, Jackie Onassis, Spit Syndicate and Joyride), Def Wish Cast, Thundamentals, Daily Meds, P-Smurf, Johniepee, Cult Shøtta, Jaycee and the list goes on.
With the release of the Pioneer DVJX-1, Spook began working more with audio as well as video and he became one of the Australian brand ambassadors for Pioneer, demonstrating the unit at various events and showcases. It wasn’t until the release of Serato Video and the Rane TTM57 that his passion for AVDJing was truly sparked however, as the live flexibility was exactly what he had been looking for. It was at this time he began working more with various production and DJing techniques, which he developed alongside his visual performance style.
In 2012 Spook began working with Sydney DJ Raine Supreme on their AV partnership known as NTSC. After a debut Australian tour supporting legendary oz hip hop originators Def Wish Cast, they went on to release their first full length video mixtape “Rappin to the Beat” to a fanfare of praise from the international AV elite. As NTSC, they supported artists such as Jurassic 5, Afrika Bambaataa, Pharoahe Monch, George Clinton and Parliament.
By mid 2014, Spook had been invited to join Sydney HIPHOP/FUNK/SOUL specialists The Groovedealers and tours to the NSW and VIC snowfields followed. Since then he has continued to represent the collective at gigs throughout the east coast of Australia, the ski fields of Japan, as well as hosting the Carlton Dry stage at Splendour In The Grass.
Spook's commitment to live spontaneity and continual experimentation has seen him build a style comparable to none, while earning him commendations from many of the global music industry's leaders.
